Vet School Interview [Know Coggins Testing]

16 Dec

If you have experience with horses, you better know what the Coggins test is all about.  Firstly, know Coggins, isn’t the disease you’re testing for when you draw that equine blood.  The virus is Equine Infections Anemia, and it’s a doozy in the horse world.  Here’s some (very) basic info in case a particularly wicked interviewer trieds to trip you up:

1.  Equine Infectious Anemia Virus

-rapid onset in 1st year of life:

—fever, diarrhea, edema, thrombocytopenia, anemia

-then long term asymptomatic phase

—can last decades

-must do blood test (slang = Coggins) for carriers of EIAV
