Phobia of Being Late–A Name at Long Last

3 Oct

One of my most popular posts is my “Lateness Phobia” one.  Found here:   No, never mind, I don’t know how to link a prior post to this one.  Maybe someone can comment with that how-to *thanks*

Anyway, I’m pretty sure the post keeps coming up on the most-read list because a lot of people are trying to find the name for a phobia of being late by typing late(ness) phobia into Google’s search engine–but still. . .  And I’m here to help!  Apparently, this phobia–I know a bunch of people besides myself must have it–has no legit name.  Yet.  So I have taken the liberty of finding out how phobias are named so I can put a title on our plight.

To name a phobia, it is supposed to be the root in Greek + phobia. And the Greek for late/delayed is: xpovic or xpovielv, which I can’t begin to pronounce because as I’ve learned from speech and hearing sciences American General English phonotactics disallow an xp /ksp/ to be together in a word.

So though it breaks the rules (a little) I’m going to go with the Latin word for delayed.  “Late” in Latin is sero.  And to be serophobic is to be afraid of someone with the HIV/AIDS virus, which is obviously completely different from being afraid of being late.  So I looked up the Latin word for delayed.

The word is–no kidding:  “Retardatio.”  That is awesome!  So a phobia of being late/delayed is RETARDATIOPHOBIA.  Which I suspect is pronounced with the politically INcorrect term for mentally disabled + an Itallian-sounding atio + phobic/phobia.  “ree-tard-aa-she-oo,” I think, since I don’t know how to add phonetic symbols to a blog post.

I need a WordPress tutorial it seems.  But now there is a label for my number one phobia–being delayed/late somewhere.  You’re welcome.

I am late for EVERYTHING . Be it as simple as going to the post office before it closes to Dr appts, luncheon dates, parties even my own mothers funeral. And the older I get the worse It gets with being tardy. Doesnt matter how hard i try by being prepared and organised. I have now lost all but 2 friends and 2 family members because of this horrible mental infliction. Thank God I work a job that i can show up to anytime therefore eliminating being late for that too. I get very anxiety ridden when i have to be somewhere. The stress and anxiety to be on time is so great that im sure Im headed for a heart attack for simply trying to be on time. I looked at the fear of leaving your house but I dont fit that senario. I could be staying at a hotel and have to be somewhere and cant make it on time. Its destroying my life!

Actually, if you transliterate the Greek, the word is kronis. Like in words such as chronological.

Why on earth does my name have an angry face next to it??! I didn’t put that there and I’m not angry. Just want to improve everyone’s word knowledge!
