Wording is not changed to my own yet.  I think I ended up using 1 or 2 of these.  Still, I taught myself a lot by having them ready.

-In 1874, Charcot described ALS (Rowland—WP 5).
-Known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease (Rowland—WP 5).
-ALS is a progressive, and ultimately fatal, neurodegenerative disease characterized by muscle weakness and atrophy (Kasarskis—WP 4).
-Of degenerative motor neuron diseases, ALS is the most common in adults (Borasio—WP 6).
-Clinical signs of ALS include: generalized fasciculations, progressive muscle weakness of muscles, spasticity and pyramidal tract signs, dysarthria, dysphagia, and dyspnea (Borasio—WP 6).
-A universal feature of this illness is Dysphagia, which results in decreases in body fat, lean body mass, and muscle power (Kasarskis—WP 4).
-Dysphagia eventually occurs in ALS independent of the time of disease onset (Kawai—WP 1).sample handout
-Severity of dysphagia particularly influenced by dysfunction in posterior tongue movement (Kawai—WP 1).
-The severity of early stage dysphagia primarily affected by ability of tongue to hold the bolus in the oral cavity (Kawai—WP 1).
-Bulbar involvement may contribute to higher consequences for ALS patients. Aspiration may occur because of pharyngeal residue resulting from abnormal lingual movement (Robbins—WP 2).
-As there is no definitive treatment for ALS, supportive care that blances cost and mrobidity is the recommended approach (Smith—WP 3).
lou gehrig-Due to a chronic deficient energy intake, it is recommended patients receive energy augmenting nutrition rather than high protein supplements (Kasarskis—WP 4).
-Percutaneous endoscopic gastronomy can help relieve nutritional deficiency from dysphagia(Borasio—WP 6).
-No later then when the first symptoms of dyspnea occur, the terminal phases of the disease should be discussed with the patient. Psychological and spiritual counseling as well as collaboration of hospice care facilities will be helpful for the patient and their family during latter phases of ALS (Borasio—WP 6).
-Mechanical ventilation is non-invasive and typically administered at home to treat respiratory insufficiency (Borasio—WP 6).
