A big part of the reason the Dyatlov tragedy became the mystery that it is today, is how the USSR handled the investigation. They were evasive, which could have been for many reasons: To protect manufacturing and/or military security, keep gulag human rights violations under wraps, to hide war crimes, because everything was already compartmentalized in their government and this was standard procedure, or because some unworldly event occurred and they didn’t want the public to panic. We don’t know if USSR legitimate authorities were working alone, or if they partnered with the KGB. We don’t know if the government did their investigation in earnest, and if KGB surreptitiously undermined the findings. Answers have been provided that don’t add up and a lot has gone unexplained. It’s no wonder the public thinks there was a cover-up!

We don’t know whether KGB was involved in the deaths of tourists, but we can with great degree of certainty assume that had to get involved once the investigation got the results of the physical analysis. We don’t know why it was done. It is not a normal thing to do in the murder cases, but it was done anyway. Some have suggested that someone knew that tourists were carrying tainted clothes, while others suggested that several of the tourists worked with the radioactive materials so presence of the radioactivity was possible from job exposure.

We’re finally here! The reason I wanted to write about the Dyatlov Pass Incident. Now we will put it all together. I’m going to go through the (known) autopsy findings and intersperse radiation symptoms/complications to show it is plausible that the group died due to some sort of nuclear effects.

REMEMBER

The 4 variables:

Dose. The more radiation, the worse the symptoms.

Time. How long was the radiation exposure? Brief could be smaller impact, extended could be worse.

Shielding. How direct was the exposure? Drinking radioactive material will be worse than being exposed to trace amounts.

Distance. Being in the immediate vicinity of an explosion will be worse.

Upon radioactive exposure there can be immediate symptoms. Then depending on the above for factors there is lag time where the exposed person appears to get better. They feel fine and walk around and live their life. Then other, perhaps worse, outcomes of the radiation exposure come on later.

So just because the Dyatlov group were vigorously mountaineering does not mean they were not exposed to radiation.

Here is a sparse timeline of (known) nuclear weapons testing to show the Dyatlov group was in the vicinity of toxic activity. Did they get caught up in some test, encounter dangerous materials, or just get exposed to environmental contaminants out there? It’s not out of the rehlm of possibility given the time and place.

During war, things were shot, sunk, burned, destroyed–many of them left where they lay (lay? lied? left where they were). Think how many ships and subs, not to mention everything those carried were left in the water?

What I’m continuing to emphasize, is that it is not out of the realm of possibilities the Dyatlov Pass hikers encountered some type of weapon, toxin from old artillery, or even ecological factors that surprised and injured them. What I’m trying to show you is the risks in the Ural Mountains are almost ubiquitous because of the soviet rushed industrialization and war-prep and fighting.

Secondarily what I’m saying is what our ancestors have done to our environment is a big YIKES (understatement) and I’m not sure it will be salvageable. Especially without some all-encompassing, completely collaborative efforts.

World War I was 1914-1918 and swaths of the French countryside are unusable and dangerous. What is Siberia like now, and what was it like immediately in the aftermath of WWII and into the Cold War? The Dyatlov group could have ventured through some gnarly environmental travesties without knowing it. They could have camped upon some unexploded weapon that was under layers of snow. There could have been chemicals from old weapons anywhere in their vicinity. The speculations are endless. But the facts are something surprised the campers and they cut their way out of the tent. Whatever it was that shocked them was so bad they did not go back for their shoes or supplies. Could it have been related to the military activity in the Ural Mountains?

I’m trying to show that it’s not far-fetched to think the members of Dyatlov Pass party could have been exposed to some sort of environmental contamination living in the Soviet Union or hiking through the Ural Mountains. Could they have traveled through or camped in some sort of hot spot?

Here are some maps that give an idea about how much agriculture and industrialization was taking place near the hikers’ route:

Where there is agriculture and industry, there will be pollution and possibly plausibly (we’re talking soviet era War-times) environmental contamination.

What I’m getting at is all of these factories along with their pesticides, chemicals, waste, and pollution could have impacted the hikers in some negative way. Did they go through an unmarked danger zone? Is it possible they ingested toxins or washed in radioactive water? Maybe there was some sort of industrial waste that caught fire? Some sort of environmental hazard could have caused a reaction or hurt the group in some way…
